The letters of Jacob R. Van Arsdale include two letters to Jacob's father Isaac, from Jacob's uncle Henry Van Arsdale, on the subject of Jacob's entry into Rutgers College, and one letter to Isaac Van Arsdale from Peter J. Nevius. The remaining correspondence consists of letters from Jacob to his father while a student at both Rutgers College and New Brunswick Theological Seminary and during the initial years of his pastoral ministry.
These records chronicle the administrative career of Irving S. Upson, who from 1890-1915 took on various roles within Rutgers College. These roles include that of the first university registrar, secretary, and treasurer, as well as college librarian. These roles saw the development of various other offices present in the university today, including alumni relations and the financial office of the Athletic Association.
The records and papers of Austin Scott, 1865-1927 (bulk, 1871-1922) consist of records from his presidency of Rutgers College and personal papers, including his notes from graduate history study in Germany.
