Scope and Contents

Summary: The material in the following subseries broadly cover McCormick's career at Rutgers, from his committee work to his time as Dean of Rutgers College, University Historian, and University Professor.

The "Affiliations, Programs, and Committees" files contain correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, newsletters, memoranda, membership lists, and notes related to the role he played in various university and faculty committees and commissions, many for whom he served as Chair. One of the larger sections of material is devoted to McCormick's role as Chair of the Joint Commission on University Governance. Included in this section is supporting material that provides background to many of the organizational changes made to the structure University Governance and the University Senate between 1951 and 1981. It also includes various draft versions, both preliminary (September 1979) and final (December 1980), of the Report from the Special Committee to Study the Senate.

The "Events of 1969" folders include correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, clippings, meeting minutes, transcripts and testimony of public hearings, and other materials related to the events of 1968-1969, the Urban University Program, the Transitional Year Program, and the Educational Opportunity Fund. The events of 1969 largely concern the black student protest movement at Rutgers, and it contains material dating from between 1968 and 1971 with particular focus on the "events of '69," (as listed on one of McCormick's original file folders). The material deals with the protests and related events as they occurred on the three Rutgers campuses (New Brunswick, Camden, and Newark), and consists of the research conducted and notes made by McCormick in his capacity as Chairman of the special faculty committee formed to address the demands of the Rutgers College Student Afro-American Society. The material also focuses on the development of the Transitional Year Program, which made funds solicited from the faculty available to disadvantaged students (McCormick was Chairman of the Rutgers College Transitional Year Program Fund).

The "Subject Files" include material researched, collected, and written by McCormick on various subjects dealing with Rutgers, including coeducation and the Federated College Plan. The files contain meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, notes, clippings, programs, speeches, and memoranda. Items of note in the subseries are those related to McCormick's roles as University Historian, University Professor, and Dean of Rutgers College, including the congratulatory correspondence he received after notice of his appointment to the Deanship was made public. The "University Historian" file is of particular interest, as it documents materials related to his proposed duties as University Historian and the projects and reports with which he was to be involved, including the development of the University Archives and the University history project.
